When we focus on what really matters-a rich relationship with God-we don’t need to be rich with money. And sometimes people can be just as focused on storing up more and more possessions. Say: Chipmunks are very preoccupied with making sure they have enough to eat. What can you do to focus more on the treasure that really matters, rather than accumulating stuff here on earth?.What are some things people try to store up?.Based on this passage, what’s good or bad about the way chipmunks save their food?.After kids have played for a bit, read aloud Luke 12:16-21. The omnivorous rodents also chow down on fungi, fruit, insects, worms, tubers, flower buds, and snails. Keep kids safe by making sure no one’s chipmunk target is near another child. A chipmunk’s diet isn’t confined to seeds and nuts. Have kids try to feed their chipmunks by tossing the pebbles into the mouth. Then have kids each take a few pebbles as pretend nuts. Attach a paper or Styrofoam cup to make an open mouth. Have kids each make a chipmunk by cutting out the Chipmunk template and following the directions to fold and glue it. Please keep your dog on a leash and do not allow your pets to chase any wildlife.Since chipmunks are so hungry, let’s make a “Feed the Chipmunk” craft and see how much food you can give your chipmunk. Most eastern chipmunks survive for about two years in the wild. This is a great bait for trapping them in the wintertime when fruits aren’t as plentiful. Young will begin to survive on their own at eight weeks. Chipmunks are also attracted to seeds and nuts. After young are weaned, females move to a different burrow and leave young in their natal burrow until they disperse. The female gestation period is about 35 days. The babies are born blind and hairless in their underground burrows. Family LifeĬhipmunks can have two litters a year - one in spring and one in midsummer. The small ones can weigh up to 1.76 ounces whereas the bigger ones weigh up to 4.40 ounces. They can vary from 7 11 inches in body length. Chipmunks are the smallest members of their squirrel family. They are the smallest creatures in their family. Pet food- cat or dog food contains high levels of protein. After two months, the pups separate from their mother. They also eat bird seeds if they find them. Chipmunks also eat salamanders, earthworms, and tiny frogs, though mostly wild chipmunks eat these. They will even carry the soil they dig up away from the burrow, so the location stays hidden. Carrion/dead animals, small birds, snails, slugs, and bird eggs are foods that chipmunks eat when food is scarce. In nature, this rodent will dine on insects, fungi, small frogs, worms, and bird eggs. Wild chipmunks prefer to be alone and only come together to mate. Chipmunks have four toes on their back feet and five on their front feet. It only weighs 1.1 to 1.8 ounces as an adult. While the entrance to their burrows may look small, the burrows can extend up to three feet underground.Ĭhipmunks are always concerned about predators, so they choose places to burrow near natural cover, like rocks or logs. The smallest chipmunk is the Least Chipmunk. Unlike their tree-dwelling cousins, chipmunks prefer to burrow underground. Foraging for their own food is healthier than accepting human food handouts.Ī chipmunk’s cheek pouch can actually stretch to be three times the size of its head! That’s very useful when they’re collecting food to store for the winter. They collect seeds, nuts, berries, and mushrooms to take back to their burrow. Chipmunks are perfectly capable of feeding themselves. DietĬhipmunks use their cheeks to help them store food. They prefer forested natural areas, as trees provide nuts and seeds and protection from predators, such as hawks. BehaviorĬhipmunks are most active during the daytime. They do not hibernate but stay mostly underground during the colder months.įoraging for food occurs mainly on the ground, but they can also climb. Their tails are shorter and usually much less fluffy than a squirrel's. Chipmunks are less than half that length, and weigh just 4 ounces - that's lighter than a baseball! Chipmunks also have black, brown, or white stripes that run along their back. Squirrels' bodies are typically 9-12 inches long (excluding their tail). While they are both members of the squirrel family, Sciuridae, chipmunks are a totally different species.Įastern chipmunk (left) and an eastern gray squirrel (right) Chipmunks are even occasionally mistaken for baby squirrels. People sometimes confuse eastern chipmunks with eastern gray squirrels. Although our eastern gray squirrels get most of the attention, eastern chipmunks are pretty common in our parks, too.Ĭhipmunks can be found scurrying along the ground looking for food - sometimes with their cheeks stuffed with seeds, nuts, and other snacks. As you explore our parks, keep your eyes peeled for these cute critters, especially in the fall when they gather food for winter.
